Rutgers University Reseach Reports 007 Creeping Bentgrass to Have Improved Salt Tolerance. 

Recent research conducted at Rutgers University has found 007 creeping bentgrass to have tolerance of high salinity irrigation water compared to the bentgrass variety Seaside II (Seaside II has gained a reputation for having improved salt tolerance compared to other bentgrass varieties). 

The following results are from salt tolerance research conducted at Rutgers by Dr. Stacy Bonos with salt levels applied from high salinity irrigation water.

Results from a season long field study conducted by Dr. Bonos found the variety 007 to be amongst the highest rated for tolerance to salinity. In this test 007 rated higher than the variety Seaside II, a variety most commonly promoted for use as more salt tolerant compared to other bentgrass varieties.

From a similar study conducted in a greenhouse the varieties 007 and Tyee were in the highest rated grouping for salinity tolerance while the varieties Shark and Kingpin rated amongst the lowest.

Results from the greenhouse salinity trial showed there was no advantage to the variety Seaside II, a variety promoted for salt tolerance, over the varieties 007 and Tyee.

The greenhouse study was conducted over a ten week period using four levels of salinity applied by modifying the irrigation water. The four levels for salinity solutions applied were EC = 0, 4, 8 and 12 dS/m.

The Golf De L'Ocean golf course is confirmation for 007 having good salt and heat tolerance -  irrigation water has 3 gr. / litre salt.

Case study, see photo below:  The greens at the Golf De L'Ocean golf course, Agadir, Morocco in northern Africa, were seeded to 100% 007 creeping bentgrass in 2007.  The golf course superintendent, Sebastian Duteil, reports that "007 has very good salt and heat tolerance - In fact the irrigation water has 3 gr. / litre salt.  007 has very good disease tolerance with medium maintenance needs."   

The variety 007 has excellent overall turf qualities along with improved resistance to Dollar Spot and Brown Patch.  007 creeping bentgrass is recommended for use for seeding high quality putting greens as well as tees and fairways.
